After applying the Lean Healthcare approach in industry, Sylvain Chaussé is now responsible for projects to deploy this approach at the CHUS. He will talk about implementing this approach in the different clinical sectors. What are the specifics, issues and conditions for success, but also the difficulties that might be encountered when deploying this approach in the health care community?

The Lean Healthcare approach in health care: the experience of a physician-manager

Dr. Louis Marie Simard,
Director of Professional Services, Hôpital du Sacré-coeur de Montréal

Dr. Simard will share his experience as a medical director at the Dr. Georges-L. Dumont Regional Hospital in Moncton, NB, when the Lean model was implemented in oncology and then in the surgery unit. What are the obstacles and what factors encourage collaboration between physicians? What impact does the approach have on medical practice and the quality of services for the population? These are some of the topics that Dr. Simard will cover.

Opening remarks / Cuba : A winning populational approach

The effectiveness of the Cuban approach to maternal health and early childhood development is based substantially on what the Cubans call the “polyclinic”. This type of institution plays a much broader role than the health clinics found in Québec because it also integrates science, knowledge transfer, parental education and community engagement. Our speaker will describe this approach and the results obtained.

The UK model

Tim Doran, M.D.
Clinical Research Fellow, National Primary Care Research & Development Centre, University of Manchester, UK

In 2004, after a series of national initiatives associated with marked improvements in the quality of care, the National Health Service of the United Kingdom introduced a pay-for-performance contract for family practitioners. This contract increases existing income according to performance with respect to 146 quality indicators covering clinical care for 10 chronic diseases, organization of care, and patient experience. Our speaker draws a picture of the UK experience, with an emphasis on future perspectives.

“News” capsule: Obama’s reform and the impact on Québec and Canada

An attentive observer of US public policy, the speaker will talk to us about the US health reform being put forward by President Obama. In particular, he will present the structure of this reform and the issues it presents for Americans. He will also talk about the possible impact of this reform on the health care system in Canada and Québec.
